Sen. Byron Dorgan says a Senate committee has approved his legislation that would require Theodore Roosevelt National Park to use volunteer hunters to thin its elk herd.

The park is considering several options, including volunteer shooters. Dorgan's plan would allow the volunteers to keep the meat.

Other options the park is considering include relocating elk after checking them for disease, and rounding up elk and euthanizing them.

The plan has been more than five years in the making. It's aimed at finding the best way to reduce the elk herd in the park's south unit, which has grown to more than double the preferred size.

Park officials are studying comments that came in during a three-month public comment period, before making a decision.

I'll believe it when I see it....and I won't be holding my breath.  The park can't control prairie dogs or even leafy spurge.  How can we expect them to allow the death of an elk?

I'm interested in the places between places.

How dare you, the government knows best!

I am not holding my breath either.  Agendas are present and they cloud judgment on doing the right thing which is supporting amendments to rid the current rules from burdensome text.

I am sure that rounding up the Elk and euthanizing them would be the most cost effective way of managing the herd as well. Why is that even an option?

In a weird sort of way, they actually do in this case.  Although they don't realize it.  The  more elk that are in the park, the more elk that can leave and populate our public lands, thus increasing our hunting opportunities in the long term.  Many times doing nothing is the best thing.  I would like to see them lower the fence in about 100 places though...

I can agree with that.  They need to drive them off the park so we can have a more healthy population in the hunting units but at the same time volunteer hunters would be a good route to take.
