FLW Championship In the Books

BISMARCK, N.D. — With an Angler of the Year title and four PWT victories, Tommy Skarlis is one of the most accomplished anglers in professional walleye fishing. But up until today, his resume had one glaring omission: a Walmart FLW Walleye Tour Championship victory.

Skarlis may best be know for his colorful personality and his sponsor monologues – but make no mistake, he can catch walleyes with the best of them. He proved it this week by locating a huge pod of Missouri River walleyes and executing each of the four tournament days.

The Waukon, Iowa, angler found his honeyhole with teammate and friend Ross Grothe on the second day of practice. The area, located near the mouth of Beaver Creek, took 45 minutes to reach each morning from the launch site at...

In the end, it came down to three photos.  The winner Ryan Genre took the top prize with 164 votes for his photo titled "Devils Lake Eagles".  Tied for second was Brad McClean photographing his son Easton in "Easton's Perch" and Charles Sorenson's photo titled "Yah Baby" showing his son Nevada after a successful spring turkey hunt in North Dakota.  Following the top three vote getters the voting was fierce and very close.  Everyone capturing their outdoor moments...

Field Care Tips: Preserving Your Trophy
By: Jamie Risovi

Deer opener throughout much of the country is considered a holiday to most deer hunters.  This is especially true for over 60,000 North Dakotan hunters that enter the field.  Some are entering for table fare while others enter for the buck of a lifetime but one thing is for sure...we all enter the field for the memories.  In doing so, we need to take the necessary steps to ensure our harvest is properly cared for.  Award winning taxidermist Jamie Risovi from New Rockford, ND has some helpful tips for both field dressing and preparation for preserving your trophy...

The Eyes of Oahe
Bill Schneider

If you like to fish for walleyes--often called “eyes” because they need such big ones to gather as much light as possible down at the bottom of the lake where they almost always dwell--you’re probably like me and dream about fishing South Dakota’s Oahe Reservoir. I finally had my chance last month, and now, I’m already trying to figure out how to get back there for more. Oahe is one of South Dakota’s Great Lakes, highly acclaimed as one of the best walleye fisheries in the world. And it’s massive, to say the least,
Walleye and Wind
By: Jason Mitchell

The affect of wind on walleye is almost cliché. Follow the wind or fish the windy shore. Wind stacks up baitfish and then the walleye follow. The reality is however that this cliché is only right half the time so this theory is just another half truth. There are so many scenarios where wind has a negative affect on walleye location and movements. There are many times where we are more productive avoiding the wind and the more we can recognize just when wind is...
Fishing for the Future
By: Mark Bry

A young boy went fishing with his dad on Beaver Creak Bay of Lake Sakakawea. It was a clear and sunny North Dakota day. The boy sat at the back of the boat as his dad fished getting ready to pull lindy rigs tipped with leeches. As they fished along a point in 14 to 17 feet of water the boy began catching walleyes as his lindy-rig hit the bottom of the lake. The feeding frenzy continued as the morning went forward…
South Dakota's Missouri System Set For Banner Year
By: Carl Madson

While walleye attract most of the notoriety and while Lake Oahe is known far and wide as one of the nation’s top walleye fishing destinations, Riis admits that there are other opportunities for anglers that are awfully good right now. “The salmon fishing on the lower end of Lake Oahe should be really good this year.” Also, Lake Sharpe and Frances Case both are top walleye producers but often get overshadowed by...
Digging up Bones
Tony Mariotti

Every spring I set out on a quest to the woods to find these bones. I head out on weekend afternoons to areas that I have driven by and seen deer feeding or areas that I know have held a big buck during the fall that I was unable to harvest during the legal season. By locating an antler that has been shed, I can............
