More jobs lost in June than expected

The unemployment rate ticks up to 9.5%. Average hourly earnings are flat. Oil pulls back.

Posted by Elizabeth Strott on Thursday, July 2, 2009 8:18 AM

Elizabeth StrottAll eyes are on this morning's June jobs report from the Labor Department, and it wasn't a pretty picture.

The economy shed 467,000 jobs last month, a far greater decline than the 325,000 economists had expected. The May number was revised to a loss of 322,000 jobs from an initially reported 345,000.

The unemployment rate rose to 9.5% in June, up slightly from 9.4% in May. It was the smallest increase since November, but the rate is still the highest level since August 1993.

Stocks made gains on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) closed up 57 points, or 0.7%, to 8,504. The Nasdaq Composite Index ($COMPX) added 11 points, or 0.6%, to 1,846, and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index ($INX) gained 4 points, or 0.4%, to 923.

The average work week fell to 33 hours, the lowest level since 1964, when data were first recorded. Average hourly earnings were flat at $18.53. Economists were looking for a 0.2% gain in June. Hourly earnings were up 2.7% from June 2008, the smallest year-over-year gain since September 2005.

The economy has shed about 6.5 million jobs since the recession began in December 2007.

"Payrolls will be going down the rest of the year and the unemployment rate will be rising,'' John Silvia, chief economist at Wachovia, told Bloomberg News. "The challenge for the Obama administration is that we'll have positive economic growth but still no job growth. It's going to be tough on them."

Crude oil fell $1.03 to $68.28 a barrel this morning.

Dividends in focus for second half

The S&P 500 gained 15% in the second quarter, its largest quarterly gain since 1998. It was a different picture for companies and their dividends, however. Only 233 S&P 500 companies raised their dividends in the second quarter, the lowest count and breaking the old record of 265 in 1958, according to Standard & Poor's 500 senior index analyst Howard Rosenblatt.

"The current trend to conserve cash and cut dividends has become defensive, with even relatively healthy companies choosing to reduce payouts. Until we see the economy better, and not just for one quarter, many companies will remain gun shy about parting with their cash," Silverblatt wrote in a note to clients this morning.

Now that the second half of 2009 is under way, the S&P needs to advance 60% to break even for the decade, Silverblatt said.

The saddest thing about posts with headings like this is how the talking heads and far right and far left idiots have divided this country.  What ever happened to "one nation"?  What happened to everyone buckling down and working together to make this the strongest country in the world.  Now it's all us vs them and each side hoping and doing all they can to make sure whatever party's in charge fails.  Talk about being unpatriotic.  Truly a shame.  Our biggest enemy has become ourselves.

If BOTH parties would stop lieing to the public this would really help everyone.

Don't make a promise you can't keep very simple.  I will try is a lot better than I promise and can't get it done.

gonefsn,

That's actually not true anymore.  If you listened to the shows, the people blogging, etc everyone wants the republicans to come to the left more.  Well guess what, that has been happening more and more.  It is evident in the elections with the dems winning and the RINOs emerging.  Am I off base in saying that?  Conservatism is being left behind (has been for quite a few years now).  And look where it has gotten us.

A seemingly never ending decline.  Time to get back to the roots that made America what it was.  Period.

There are morons on both sides of the aisle!!!!

The sooner each side admits that, the sooner we can start seeing eye to eye..

I hate it when people are so one sided they can't even consider another point of view...

Did I vote for Obama??   No!!!   Do i agree with most of his stances?   No!!!   But he is still our president, so I will stand behind him.......and every president after him!!!

We DON'T have to stand behind him.
I DON'T respect him... He has done nothing to EARN my trust or respect, all he has done thus far is make it harder to trust him.

I do agree that we have to be united as a people.... but nothing can be further from being had in this country right now.
With the dems constructing the largest power grab and taxations that this country has ever seen.... we are just  dividing further and further.

At this point, there is only a wait till 2010... but I do believe we are at a point of no return.

We either a: have a 2nd civil war (peacefully or firefight)
b: MAJOR congressional overhaul
c: Impeachment of Obama
d: socialist republic revolution and dissolvement of the US Consitution at a slowed pace.

I didn't see anyone saying what your saying when the last President was in office! The reason for the divide now is pretty simple, look at what is happening, we are becoming nation that is more and more controlled by the federal gov't. This is not what is in our constitution, its not how our founders invisioned it to be. So, of course your going to get a divide when someone or something is trying to steal our freedoms from us. I for one will not be silent!

I was anti-Obama before it was cool

Hunter, I said the same thing when GW was in there.  Read some of the old threads.  When it was all Repubs, they did all they could to run all over the Dems.  Now the Dems seem to think they have to do the same thing since they got a little power.  We shouldn't have to completely switch from one party to the other every election because of their being so extreme.  Extreme conservatism to just as bad as extreme liberalism.  Extreme capitalism is just as bad as extreme socialism.  Each have a some good offer and each have their faults.  The fact is most of us in this country want to take care of our poor, elderly, children, and those down and out.  We also want to make sure businesses can run without too much interference.  But we also want to make sure businesses and those down and out don't take advantage of us.  The worst thing we can have in this country is when one party controls all three branches.   When at least one or more are controlled by the other party they at least have to find some middle ground.  What went on when the repubs had all 3 and what's now happening with the dems having all three is ludicrous.

IMNSHO, part of what we are seeing today is much different than what we went through between political parties in the past.

Often in the past the two major parties agreed on the basic premise (defeating the Kaiser, the Nazis, manifest destiny, civil rights, etc) and only disagreed on how to achieve the end goals.

Today though we are seeing fundamental differences between the far right and far left with regard to the goals.  This is the root of the greater animosity from what I can tell.
